Marching Band and Color Guard

“Please welcome to the field, your Simi Valley Marching Pride!”

What is Marching Band?

Marching Band is one of few uniquely American forms of music. Developed by John Philip Sousa, and later expanded by various other individuals, Marching Band has gone from a military exercise in precision to a dedicated form of art that has infinite interpretations, and each year our staff designs a show specifically for our students to perform at various competitions in Southern California, with the goal of receiving the honor of being invited to perform at SCSBOA championships.

Marching Band is the biggest ensemble we have at Simi Valley High School. It brings students of all levels, backgrounds and instruments together to create a product greater than the sum of it’s parts.

❋ Schedule

Marching Band has a 3 day a week rehearsal schedule, designed to maximize our time in our stadium. We rehearse from 5:30-9:00 at SVHS on Mondays and Wednesdays, and on Fridays from 3-5.

Marching Band performs at home football games and various competitions taking place on Saturdays from the months of September-November.

We also begin rehearsing before school begins, Monday-Friday the two weeks directly before school begins, from 8:00 AM-4:00 PM.

❋ Collaboration

Marching Band brings together various different sections with different responsibilities and difficulties.

There are 3 primary sections of marching band.

  1. The Hornline, composed of all the woodwind and brass players that make up a majority of the ensemble.

  2. The Color Guard, a visual section of the ensemble that uses equipment like flags, rifles, and sabers to showcase the thematic elements of the program.

  3. The Percussion section, divided into two parts, the marching percussion or “Battery”, and the stationary section of large percussion instruments and electronics called the Front Ensemble.

Each section of students and each individual student has unique responsibility towards the ensemble’s execution of the show, marching band is about coming together to do something incredible.

❋ Expert Instruction

Marching Band is taught by a variety of high level instructors for their specific areas. Staff Bios are available on the About Page.
